Story

Music has been an impactful source in my life ever since I was a child, but it wasn't until I was a teenager that music became a main interest of mine. I started writing instrumental music when I was 11 and 12 years old - and this instrumental music was usually inspired by scenes or emotions in my head designed to tell a story. The consistent songwriting in my house ultimately led to collaboration with my siblings, and we would write songs and perform together all the time, eventually starting a Christian rock/pop band called narrowpath.

As a band we performed all around the Mid-Atlantic and took our performances very seriously, because at that time we were trying to pursue a career in that industry. I produced our debut album, we were involved in a Christian talent organization called AMTC (Actors, Models, and Talent for Christ) which held a large conference/competition twice a year called SHINE. Hundreds of VIPs (including record label executives) looking for talent would come watch the performances at SHINE, and my siblings and I were finalists in that competition. SHINE gave us a lot of exposure and connections, and proved to be a huge step for our growth as a band. Following this we had the incredible experience of recording an EP with a producer in Nashville, Tennessee later that same year - which helped us learn a ton, and we held concerts for various churches, organizations, and schools, as well as participated in different competitions in the four years the band existed.

I enjoyed aspects of narrowpath very much, but as it continued to get more intense and I had a better understanding of the life performing offered, I realized that I wasn't as content with the show business side to music. Instead, I found myself drawn to production - I found my "happy place" not on the stage, but behind a studio desk. The fun and fulfillment for me was in finding the perfect sounds, melodies, and mixes that really made a song and that struck the right "emotional chord." Reflecting further, I discovered that I missed writing the music I used to create as a 12 year old - instrumental music designed to tell stories. But it wasn't until I had a conversation with my dad one day, discussing film music and Hans Zimmer, that I fully came to the conclusion I needed to pursue a different path than the band, to pursue my true calling - film scoring.

It's been several years since that conversation with my dad and much has changed since. I've worked on various short films, web series, trailers, and musicals. Currently, I'm a student at the New Zealand School of Music, studying for my Bachelor of Music with a specialization in film scoring. And after finishing my studies, I plan to move to California to network with other filmmakers, directors, and producers there.

So that's me - these few paragraphs tackle only a glimpse of my life, but I'm grateful for all that has happened to bring me to the present, and I'm beyond excited for what the future holds.

Skills

I'm very hard-working and reliable, so when something has a deadline and needs to get done, I'm your girl. But I also thrive in a creative environment and love to hear a director's vision and help bring it to life. I'm a bit of a perfectionist, but I don't let that get in the way of production or anything else (except for maybe...sleep). I enjoy writing a good melody for a score, but I don't rely on one method of composing. I'm quite adaptable to the needs of the story.

Journey

The Creative Journey
Music was around my house all the time, and I was very creative and imaginative as a child, which has, in some shape or form, influenced my love for film scoring. As a child I took piano lessons, and learning piano helped me to expand my abilities and write original music. We had a ginormous, heavy Korg keyboard that I would experiment on, and eventually we got our first Mac because of the music I was creating. As a 12 and 13 year old I started out tracking in Garageband, not really knowing what I was doing but having a blast. After starting the band with my brother and sister, I taught myself Logic Pro, I did a lot of prep work for our live performances, helped choreograph our shows, programmed lights, and of course did a lot of the songwriting. And then, once I knew I didn't want to pursue the performance-side of music, I went full-blown into film music and submerged myself into it. I've worked on all kinds of different projects and I'm excited for the future films to come :)
The Faith Journey
I became a Christian when I was in second grade. I went to a Christian school at the time and during a chapel the guest speaker was talking about how God's love was like penny. All the kids in the audience were given pennies to examine, and the preacher likened the penny's circular shape to God's never-ending love. As a child I remember finding that comforting and I was moved by the message. I gave my heart to the Lord then.

Flash forward a few years later and when I was about 12 years old, I was really struggling. Struggling to a point that sometimes I thought that suicide might save me. I didn't know it at the time but I was struggling with symptoms of OCD, and they were taking over my life in a very real way. I felt alone and very weak, and I remember having some real heart-to-hearts with God. He got me through that period of my life, though, and made me stronger than before.

As a teenager, my family hit a really, really rough period. It was a time when, even though the truth can set you free it can be very painful in the process. God was there through it all, keeping my family together through everything we went through, and just like the first real rough time of my life, we've come out of it stronger than before.

Recently I heard a message about how Christians can get it wrong, and it really really stuck with me. The pastor was talking about vases: a completely broken vase and an unblemished, perfect vase. He was saying how, very frequently, Christians find themselves going back and forth between the two. Either you're completely broken, or you've managed to feel unblemished again. This past year, with college internationally, handling a long distance relationship, and all the other stuff life threw my way, I often found myself either a broken vase or a completely perfect vase.

What I wasn't taking into account was that I didn't have to be either of those vases, nor am I supposed to be. The pastor introduced a third vase and explained an actual Japanese art form called Kintsugi - where a vase that had been broken was repaired, with gold filling in the cracks, making it more valuable, stronger (and interesting) than it had been. God uses our weaknesses to show others that He is strong. And everyday I remind myself that I'm not the broken vase or the perfect vase, but that I'm the repaired vase. And the cracks and chips I've had and the ones to come are filled in with the gold of God's glory.
