Story

Born a dreamer, my pursuit of crazy dreams started young. As a kid I learned figure skating – even competed and performed a handful of times as a young teen. I worked on graphics design and web content writing for my family's magazine of fifteen years. I also designed a few book covers. But throughout this time filmmaking was a tickling interest, which developed into a fascination. Eventually this fascination culminated in my creation of Myristica Studios, the MediaRealming YouTube channel, and my pursuit of the art in general. (More details over in the “Creative Journey” section. ;))

My absolute favorite parts of filmmaking are story creation and performance arts – directing, writing, acting, and editing specifically. It's so thrilling to see a script come to life!

Currently I'm the director at Myristica Studios and MediaRealming (both of which you can find on YouTube). At Myristica I've worked on skits, audio fiction and short films. Over at MediaRealming, we talk movies, do challenges, and have fun.

Not sure how to close this up. Well, as you're generally up to date now, I think I'll just leave you with this wise and inspiring quote:

“To inspire a dreamer is to incite all manner of chaos.”

... Okay, so maybe it's not inspiring but at least it's wise. Who said it? Well, um, I did. But I mean it in the best way. ;) So go forth, dreamers! Get messy, take chances, make mistakes (and PM me if you know where I got that line from)!

Skills

Directing. Writing. Acting. Editing. In all these I have experience in varied formats including skits, short films, and half-hour audio fiction episodes. I enjoy multiple genres including fantasy, spiritual, humor, action, and children's fiction. My primary focus is on directing and writing, but I absolutely love acting and I also enjoy editing.

Directing: I've directed numerous skits, twelve half-hour audio fiction episodes, and two short films. I find great pleasure in seeing words on a cold page come to life, vivid and captivating. It sends tingles up my spine!

Writing: I've written half-hour audio fiction episodes, short films, skits and short novels. I enjoy writing varied genres, though if I had to choose favorites, I'd probably say fantasy and children's fiction. As a writer I try my best to create characters and dialogue that are both true to life and engaging.

Acting: I've played a variety of characters, from a perky reporter to a confident union leader to a snobbish college student. I can do a range of accents including (but not limited to!) Russian, Irish, English and Hispanic. I know basic piano, woodwind recorder, and I competed in figure skating as a teenager.

Editing: I've edited both scripted and non-scripted material for a variety of projects including skits, blooper reels, half-hour audio episodes, behind-the-scenes videos, non-scripted video reviews, two short films, and more. Editing carries for me its own set of fascinations – it is an art in itself.

Journey

The Creative Journey
While filmmaking is very much my passion now, it was not my first dream. Yet even as I pursued other artistic interests I was always drawn towards film, going way back to the days of Wishbone and Mary Kate and Ashley. (It was Wishbone who first taught me that filmmakers used hoses to create rain. What a revelation! And that Mary Kate and Ashley birthday commercial... well, I just wanted to be one of the actors cuz they got to eat cake. But anyway...)

So I had a long-time interest in acting, writing, and general behind-the-scenes filmmaking. It's all so fascinating! But also, as time went on I noticed a growing void of clean films whose target audience was adults. (Why must I, by virtue of being an adult, take my entertainment with a dose of language, unnecessary violence, blurred lines of morality or other “adult” elements?) These things were main players in my decision to create Myristica Studios, the MediaRealming YouTube channel, and to begin my pursuit of the art in general.

At Myristica we began with audio fiction – a good starting point, I figured. Then we moved on to YouTube videos, adding the visual component to the audio we'd learned. After that we began making short films, having filmed our second one just last year. Some of our projects are just meant for fun (our interview with the Leprechaun for instance). But some of our projects have had very specific messages. When we had something to say, we said it.

Currently I'm working at Myristica Studios and MediaRealming, building the dream. I'd also love to be involved with other people's projects.

At Myristica, the dream is that it become a studio that consistently produces great, clean art of varied genres – from fantasy, to action, to humor and more, some for children, some for adults, ALL free of such elements as language, needlessly graphic or excessive violence, etc. Also that it be a place that can be trusted morally, both in front of the camera and behind.

At MediaRealming, we just have fun – we talk movies and filmmaking, do reviews and challenges, and whatever else we get the notion to do. I love it!

So there, in a nutshell, is my creative journey, and I'm still on the road. We'll see what happens!

God's will be done.
The Faith Journey
Simply put: I'm a Christian, avidly and gratefully so. As to how I got here, well, to be honest I don't remember a day in my life when I didn't know God personally. Asking me about the day I met Him is like asking me about the day I first saw the sun – it's like it's always been. I don't remember discovering it, I only remember seeing by it. This is something I am very grateful to Him for; He came to me early.

As to the present of the journey, well, I'm not perfect, but I do my best, one step at a time, to keep my feet to the path, my hands to the grindstone, and my eyes on Jesus.

One of Myristica's audio fiction episodes. This one in particular is a favorite of mine.

"Alex Hijacked" was released early 2017, but was written and recorded a year or two earlier. It was written by Shannon McDermott, with contributions from me. (Mainly just the gas station scene.)

I also acted the gas station cashier.

"Characters on Strike (Authors be Advised)" was written, produced and posted last year. I acted union leaders Jeanie Oak - one of my favorite parts to date - and Fiana Gwynn. Both were so much fun to play!

I also wrote the script.

Enjoy!
